NEW WATCH TIMEZ | Roaming the Universe with Audemars Piguet's Star Wheel
Audemars Piguet has made another big move! The newly released CODE 11.59 Star Wheel watch reinterprets the "wandering hours" complication, marking a grand return for the Star Wheel series after two decades.
This function traces its origins to 1655 when a watchmaker, commissioned by Pope Alexander VII, invented the "wandering hours mechanism." In 1991, Audemars Piguet launched its first "wandering hours" watch (Ref. 25720), naming it the "Star Wheel." The watch featured three star-shaped gears supporting three sapphire crystal hour discs, fixed to a central rotating wheel. Between 1991 and 2003, Audemars Piguet released approximately 30 models in the Star Wheel series.
Retaining the classic design of the Code 11.59, this watch features a black textured rubber-coated strap paired with an 18K white gold pin buckle. The bezel is also crafted from 18K white gold, while the case middle and crown are made of black ceramic, achieving a perfect balance of polished and brushed finishes.
Under the double-curved sapphire crystal, the blue aventurine dial showcases three slightly domed aluminum discs printed with white Arabic numeral hour markers, rotating slowly around their own and the central axes. A 120° fan-shaped minute display between the 10 and 2 o'clock positions adds dynamism and playfulness to time-reading, as it interacts with the movement of the three central discs.
The Audemars Piguet Star Wheel watch continues the tradition of fine watchmaking, reinventing the classic "wandering hours" function with a modern design that breathes fresh vitality into it.
